“I wanted a daughter initially, but when I found out I was having a son, I was so relieved,” Emily Ratajkowski admitted in a recent interview as she discussed parenthood with her seven-month-old son, Sylvester Apollo. “Because I think that it would bring up — I want more children, so it might be something I deal with later — being sexualized way before puberty and being aware of it.”
The model, who has recently fought for her own agency as a supermodel in a tumultuous industry, also explained how gender was never really something she saw much importance in; she and her husband, Sebastian Bear-McClard, have expressed that they “won’t know the gender until [their] child is 18 and that they’ll let [them] know then.” Getting to know her child as the years pass, the 30-year-old shared, is her top priority.
“Who will this person be? What kind of person will we become parents to? How will they change our lives and who we are?” she said. “This is a wondrous and terrifying concept, one that renders us both helpless and humbled.”
