Quest For the Top Southern Classic Rock Band – Part Two

Southern Rock is a sound that combines good old boy Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer, the 4th of July, and pickup trucks. Here’s part two of our top 10 Southern Rock Classic Rock bands of all time…

The Marshall Tucker Band (Spartanburg, SC) rocked the house in the 70s until the death of bassist Tommy Caldwell in a car accident; the name of the band comes from a piano tuner in Spartanburg.

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble (Dallas, TX) proved that Stevie was a guitar god, blending blues and rock like no other. Stevie died in a horrific helicopter accident. We miss him dearly.

Lynyrd Skynyrd (Jacksonville, FL), named after one of their teachers in high school, has become more famous and sold more records since their tragic plane crash, then when they were alive. We don’t have enough time to detail the songs and influence this band has had on all of rock, they were that good.

ZZ Top (Houston, TX) began in the late 60s as the best of class, inspiring all others that came after them. ZZ is simply 3 dudes that generate an incredible wall of sound. They must be on your bucket list to see live if you haven’t seen them already.

The Allman Brothers (Macon, GA) need to be considered the top southern band of all time, generating more interest and record sales from the late 60s through the 70s. Tragedy and triumph defined this 5 man band. Dickey Betts “Blue Sky” alone makes this southern band the winner and still champion of this wonderful genre.

Honorable Mentions: Blackfoot (Jacksonville, FL) The Black Crowes (Marietta, GA) Zack Brown Band (Atlanta), Tommy Shaw (Of Styx and Dam Yankees – Montgomery, AL).
