Laura Dern Mourns David Lynch on His Birthday: “I Will Love and Miss You Every Day”

On what would have been his 79th birthday, actor Laura Dern honored the life and legacy of her longtime collaborator and friend, filmmaker David Lynch, who passed away at 78. His family announced his death on January 16, and Dern shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute four days later.

“Happy birthday, Tidbit,” she wrote, using the affectionate nickname Lynch gave her. “I will love and miss you every day for the rest of my life.”

A Creative Partnership That Spanned Decades
David Lynch and Laura Dern shared an extraordinary professional bond, working together on several iconic projects. Their collaboration began when Lynch cast Dern in the 1986 neo-noir thriller Blue Velvet, where she starred at just 17.

The duo reunited for the 1990 cult classic Wild at Heart, in which Dern played the fiery leading role opposite Nicolas Cage. That same year, she appeared with Cage in Lynch’s avant-garde production, Industrial Symphony No. 1. Their partnership continued with Inland Empire (2006), an experimental feature that garnered critical acclaim, and the 2017 revival of Lynch’s groundbreaking series, Twin Peaks.

A Champion for Dern’s Career
Lynch not only directed Dern in some of her most memorable roles but also helped her avoid Hollywood typecasting. During a 2019 interview on Inside the Actors Studio, Dern recalled Lynch’s influence:
“It was an amazing gift that a filmmaker who knows you would say, ‘Now I want you to play the complete opposite of what you did last time.’”

In 2006, Lynch famously campaigned for Dern to receive an Oscar nomination for her performance in Inland Empire. His unconventional strategy involved sitting on a Los Angeles street corner with a live cow and a sign praising her work.

Tributes Pour In
Lynch’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and memories from collaborators. Actor Kyle MacLachlan, a frequent Lynch collaborator on films like Blue Velvet, Dune, and Twin Peaks, shared his thoughts on Instagram:
“While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.”

A Lasting Legacy
David Lynch was known for his surreal and innovative storytelling, earning four Academy Award nominations over his career. His unique vision made a lasting impact on cinema and television, from Eraserhead to Mulholland Drive to Twin Peaks.

Lynch is survived by his four children, and his loss is felt deeply across the entertainment industry and beyond.

As for Dern, she continues to honor his memory through her work. Following standout roles in Lonely Planet and Palm Royale last year, she will next appear in Jay Kelly, directed by frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach.
