Grit and Glory: How the 49ers Edged Out the Rams in Overtime

In a gritty Thursday Night Football clash, the San Francisco 49ers eked out a 26–23 overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams, reinforcing their status as NFC West contenders. Facing injuries to stars and plotting through adversity, backup Mac Jones stepped in for an injured Brock Purdy and delivered a gutsy performance: 342 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Kendrick Bourne emerged as a key target, hauling in 10 catches for 142 yards—his best outing yet. Meanwhile, Christian McCaffrey bolstered the ground game, accumulating 139 total yards and finding the end zone. The Rams rallied hard—Matthew Stafford slung for 389 yards and three touchdowns. Their comeback was nearly complete until Kyren Williams, who’d been instrumental in the rally, committed a costly fumble at the goal line late in regulation.

In OT, the Niners leaned on defense. With the game on the line, San Francisco stuffed Williams on 4th-and-1 at the 11-yard line, sealing the victory. Eddy Piñeiro delivered the game-winner with a 41-yard field goal. That win pushes the 49ers to 4–1 overall, 3–0 in the division, and into a firm grip on first place in the NFC West.
